What is 1099-INT?

Form 1099-INT, Interest Income, is the information return payers use to report interest payments to each recipient and to the IRS. It covers regular interest in box 1, early withdrawal penalties in box 2, interest on US savings bonds and Treasury obligations in box 3, and tax-exempt interest in box 8, along with any federal or foreign tax withheld.

Payers generally must file it for anyone paid at least $10 of reportable interest, for any foreign tax withheld on interest, or for any federal backup withholding regardless of the amount.

Who files 1099-INT?

  • Banks, credit unions, and brokers that paid $10 or more of interest to a person
  • Businesses that paid $600 or more of interest in the course of their trade or business
  • Any payer who withheld federal income tax under backup withholding rules
  • Recipients do not file the form; they report the interest on their return

How to fill out 1099-INT

  1. Enter the payer’s name, address, and TIN in the left-hand boxes.
  2. Add the recipient’s TIN, name, address, and an account number if you file more than one 1099-INT for them.
  3. Report taxable interest in box 1, any early withdrawal penalty in box 2, and US savings bond or Treasury interest in box 3.
  4. Fill in box 4 for backup withholding and box 8 for tax-exempt interest if they apply, then the state boxes if state tax was withheld.
  5. Download the PDF, send Copy B to the recipient, and file Copy A with the IRS electronically or on official scannable stock.
Worth knowing: Copy A of Form 1099-INT filed with the IRS must be e-filed through the IRIS or FIRE system, or submitted on official red-ink scannable forms ordered from the IRS. Do not file a Copy A printed from a downloaded PDF; it is not scannable and can trigger penalties.

Frequently asked questions

Do I report interest under $10 that never got a 1099-INT?

Yes. All taxable interest is reportable on your return regardless of amount. The $10 line only controls when the payer must send a form.

Where does 1099-INT interest go on my tax return?

Taxable interest goes on Form 1040. If your total taxable interest is over $1,500 you also list each payer on Schedule B.

What is box 8, tax-exempt interest, for?

It reports interest from municipal bonds and similar obligations. It is generally exempt from federal income tax but still has to be shown on your return.
