What is 1118?
Form 1118, Foreign Tax Credit, Corporations, is how a corporation computes the credit that offsets US tax on income already taxed abroad. It is one of the longer IRS forms: separate schedules build up foreign source income by category, allocate deductions, list the foreign taxes paid, accrued, and deemed paid, and apply the limitation on the credit.
A separate Form 1118 is completed for each category of income, such as general category income, passive category income, GILTI, and foreign branch income. Additional schedules cover foreign oil and gas taxes, carryover reconciliation, and foreign tax redeterminations.
Who files 1118?
- US corporations claiming a credit for income taxes paid or accrued to foreign countries
- Corporations with foreign branches, subsidiaries, or foreign source investment income
- Corporations claiming deemed-paid credits for taxes of foreign subsidiaries
- Filers attach it to Form 1120 or the corporation’s other income tax return

Frequently asked questions
How is Form 1118 different from Form 1116?
Same idea, different taxpayers. Form 1116 serves individuals, estates, and trusts; Form 1118 serves corporations, with extra schedules for deemed-paid credits, GILTI, and other rules that only apply to corporate filers.
Does every schedule of Form 1118 need to be filled in?
No. Complete only the schedules that apply to the corporation’s facts. Many filers never touch the foreign oil and gas or redetermination schedules. The instructions map out which schedules each situation requires.
Can unused corporate foreign tax credits be carried over?
Generally yes: excess credits can be carried back one year and forward up to ten, subject to category rules. Schedule K of Form 1118 tracks the reconciliation from year to year.
