What is 1149?
The Sponsored Family stream of the Visitor visa (subclass 600) allows an eligible sponsor in Australia to support a relative who wants to visit. Form 1149 is the sponsorship application that goes with the visitor visa application. The sponsor gives their own details, sets out the family relationship, and formally undertakes responsibility for the visitor during the stay.
As part of sponsoring, the department may ask for a security bond, which is a refundable amount lodged to encourage the visitor to comply with visa conditions and leave before the visa ends. Whether a bond is required, and how much, is decided by Home Affairs, so check the current requirements at the agency site rather than assuming a fixed amount.
