What is 2120?
Form 2120, Multiple Support Declaration, is used when two or more people together provide over half of a person’s support, but no one person provides more than half on their own. It identifies each other eligible person who paid over 10% of the support and confirms they have signed a statement waiving their claim to the dependent for the year.
The form is short: your information, the name of the person supported, and the names, addresses, and Social Security numbers of the other eligible contributors. You keep the signed waiver statements for your records rather than sending them to the IRS.

- Adult children who share the cost of supporting a parent

Frequently asked questions
When do I need Form 2120?
When no single person paid more than half of someone’s support, but a group of you together did, and you are the one claiming the person as a dependent. You must have paid over 10% of the support yourself.
Do the other contributors file anything?
No. They sign waiver statements agreeing not to claim the dependent, and you keep those statements. Only the person claiming the dependent attaches Form 2120 to their return.
Can we rotate who claims the dependent each year?
Yes, as long as the person claiming meets the requirements that year and the others sign waivers. A new Form 2120 is filed each year the agreement is used.
