What is 2290?

Form 2290, Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return, is the annual excise return for highway motor vehicles at or above 55,000 pounds taxable gross weight. The tax period runs from July 1 through June 30, and the return is generally due by the last day of the month after the month the vehicle is first used on public highways.

The form also handles suspensions and adjustments: you can claim suspension for a vehicle expected to travel 5,000 miles or less (7,500 for agricultural vehicles), and claim credits for vehicles that were sold, destroyed, or stolen. The stamped Schedule 1 you get back serves as proof of payment for state vehicle registration.

Who files 2290?

  • Owners of trucks, truck tractors, and buses with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more
  • Owner-operators and trucking companies registering heavy vehicles in their name
  • Filers claiming suspension for low-mileage or agricultural vehicles
  • Anyone claiming a credit for a taxed vehicle that was sold, destroyed, or stolen

How to fill out 2290

  1. Enter your name, address, and EIN; the IRS requires an EIN for Form 2290, not a Social Security number.
  2. Enter the month of first use, then figure the tax in Part I using the weight categories in the tax computation table.
  3. Complete the suspension statements in Part II if any vehicles qualify for the low-mileage suspension.
  4. List each vehicle’s VIN and weight category on Schedule 1; the IRS stamps and returns it as your proof of payment.
  5. Download the PDF and file it with payment. Note that e-filing is required when you report 25 or more vehicles, and the IRS encourages it for all filers.

Frequently asked questions

When is Form 2290 due?

By the last day of the month following the vehicle’s first month of use on public highways. For vehicles in use at the start of the July tax period, that generally means the end of August.

What is the stamped Schedule 1 for?

It is your proof that the highway use tax was paid, and most states require it before they will register or renew a heavy vehicle. E-filers receive a watermarked Schedule 1 electronically.

Can I use my SSN on Form 2290?

No. The IRS requires an employer identification number. If you do not have one, apply for an EIN and allow time for it to become active in IRS systems before filing.
