What is 2350?
Form 2350, Application for Extension of Time to File U.S. Income Tax Return, is used by U.S. citizens and resident aliens abroad who expect to claim the foreign earned income exclusion or housing exclusion on Form 2555, but have not yet met the bona fide residence test or physical presence test by their return due date. It asks the IRS for enough extra time to satisfy one of those tests.
It differs from the general extension on Form 4868: instead of a fixed six months, Form 2350 extends filing until a reasonable period after you expect to qualify. It extends the time to file, not the time to pay, so interest applies to tax paid after the regular due date.
Who files 2350?
- U.S. citizens working abroad who have not yet met the physical presence test
- Resident aliens waiting to complete a full tax year of bona fide foreign residence
- Expats who expect to file Form 2555 and need to delay filing until they qualify
- Taxpayers whose move abroad happened partway through the tax year
How to fill out 2350
- Enter your name, address abroad, and Social Security number at the top of the form.
- Enter the date you expect to qualify and the date you are asking the extension to run to, plus the tax year involved.
- Answer the questions about your foreign residence: when it began, which test you expect to meet, and whether you plan to return to the United States.
- Estimate any tax due and pay it with the application, since the extension does not extend the time to pay.
- Download the PDF, sign it, and file it with the IRS before your return’s due date, keeping a copy for your records.

Frequently asked questions
Should I use Form 2350 or Form 4868?
Use Form 2350 only when you need time specifically to meet the bona fide residence or physical presence test for Form 2555. For any other reason, the regular automatic extension on Form 4868 is the right form.
Does Form 2350 extend the time to pay my tax?
No. It extends the filing deadline only. Interest runs on unpaid tax from the regular due date, so estimate and pay what you owe with the application.
When do I have to submit Form 2350?
On or before the due date of your return. Taxpayers abroad generally get an automatic two-month extension to file, so the form must reach the IRS by that extended due date.
