What is 730?
The federal wagering excise tax applies to wagers accepted on sports events and contests and to wagering pools and lotteries conducted for profit. Form 730 reports the gross wagers accepted during the month and computes the tax, which is a percentage of the amount wagered. The rate differs depending on whether the wagers are authorized under the law of the state where accepted.
The return is due monthly, and filing goes hand in hand with Form 11-C, the occupational tax and registration return that anyone accepting taxable wagers must file before starting. Form 730 covers the excise tax on the wagers themselves, while Form 11-C covers the annual occupational tax.

Frequently asked questions
Do I also need Form 11-C?
Yes. Before accepting taxable wagers you must register and pay the occupational tax on Form 11-C, then renew it annually. Form 730 is the separate monthly return that reports the excise tax on the wagers you actually accept.
Do I file for months with no wagers?
Once you are liable and filing, you generally continue filing monthly returns even for months with no taxable wagers, until you file a final return. The instructions explain how to mark a final return when you stop accepting wagers.
