What is 8936?

Form 8936, Clean Vehicle Credit, is used to claim the federal credits for qualifying clean vehicles, including the new clean vehicle credit, the previously owned clean vehicle credit, and the qualified commercial clean vehicle credit. A separate Schedule A (Form 8936) is completed for each vehicle, and the main form totals the credits and applies the applicable limits.

Eligibility depends on factors like the vehicle, its price, where it was assembled or sourced, and your income, and buyers who transferred the credit to the dealer at the point of sale still generally need to file the form to reconcile that transfer. Recent legislation ended these credits for vehicles acquired after a cutoff date, so check the current instructions for which purchase dates still qualify.

Who files 8936?

  • Individuals who bought a qualifying new or previously owned clean vehicle and want to claim the credit
  • Buyers who transferred their credit to the dealer at purchase and must reconcile it on their return
  • Businesses claiming the qualified commercial clean vehicle credit for vehicles placed in service
  • Partnerships and S corporations passing the credit through to their owners

Frequently asked questions

I got the credit as a discount at the dealership. Do I still file Form 8936?

Generally yes. Transferring the credit to the dealer gives you the benefit up front, but you still report the vehicle and reconcile the transfer on Form 8936 with your return, and you must be under the income limits or you may have to repay it.

What information do I need for each vehicle?

At minimum the vehicle identification number, the date you placed it in service, and the credit amount, usually confirmed by the seller report the dealer gave you at purchase. Each vehicle gets its own Schedule A (Form 8936).

Is the clean vehicle credit still available?

Recent legislation ended the clean vehicle credits for vehicles acquired after a cutoff date, so whether you can claim it depends on when you acquired the vehicle. Check the current Form 8936 instructions at irs.gov for the applicable dates.
