What is 8949?
Form 8949, Sales and Other Dispositions of Capital Assets, is where you report the details of each capital asset sale: description, dates acquired and sold, proceeds, cost basis, and any adjustments. It reconciles what brokers reported to you and the IRS on Forms 1099-B or 1099-S with what you actually report on your return.
Transactions are split between Part I for short-term holdings and Part II for long-term holdings, with checkboxes indicating whether basis was reported to the IRS. The subtotals from each part carry to Schedule D (Form 1040), which computes your overall capital gain or loss.
Who files 8949?
- Investors who sold stocks, bonds, mutual funds, or cryptocurrency during the year
- Homeowners and other sellers of real estate reported on Form 1099-S when the gain is not fully excluded
- Taxpayers who need to adjust the basis or gain a broker reported, such as for wash sales
- Estates, trusts, and partnerships reporting dispositions of capital assets
How to fill out 8949
- Sort your transactions into short-term (held one year or less) for Part I and long-term for Part II.
- Check the box on each part that matches your 1099-B situation: basis reported to the IRS, basis not reported, or no 1099-B received.
- Enter each sale on its own row: description, dates, proceeds, cost basis, and any adjustment code and amount from the instructions.
- Total the proceeds, basis, adjustments, and gain or loss columns at the bottom of each part.
- Download the finished PDF and attach it to your return, carrying the subtotals to Schedule D (Form 1040).

Frequently asked questions
Do I need Form 8949 if my broker reported everything correctly?
Not always. If basis was reported to the IRS and you have no adjustments, you may be able to total those sales directly on Schedule D and skip listing them on Form 8949. Check the Schedule D instructions for the exception.
How do I report a wash sale?
List the sale on Form 8949, enter code W in the adjustment column, and add back the disallowed loss as a positive adjustment. Brokers usually flag wash sales on the 1099-B for shares held at the same firm.
Does cryptocurrency go on Form 8949?
Yes. Sales and exchanges of digital assets held as capital assets are reported on Form 8949 like other property, short-term or long-term based on how long you held them.
