Form 9465, Installment Agreement Request

If you owe more tax than you can pay at once, Form 9465 asks the IRS for a monthly installment agreement. Fill in the official PDF and file it with your return or on its own.

What is 9465?

Form 9465 requests a payment plan for tax debt: how much you owe, how much you can pay now, and the monthly amount you propose. Approval is generally streamlined when the total owed is $50,000 or less and the plan pays out within 72 months.

Interest and the late-payment penalty keep accruing on the unpaid balance during the plan, and setup fees apply, lower when you choose direct debit. Many taxpayers can skip the form entirely and use the IRS Online Payment Agreement, which answers immediately.

Who files 9465?

  • Taxpayers who cannot pay their balance in full by the deadline
  • People who owe up to $50,000 and can clear it within 72 months
  • Anyone preferring a formal monthly arrangement over ad-hoc payments

How to fill out 9465

  1. Enter your identification and the tax year and amount you owe.
  2. Propose a monthly payment and a day of the month for it.
  3. Add bank details if you choose direct debit, which lowers the setup fee and prevents missed payments.
  4. Download, sign, and attach it to the front of your return, or mail it alone to the address in the instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Will the IRS accept my proposed payment?

If you owe $10,000 or less and meet the guaranteed-agreement conditions, acceptance is automatic. Under $50,000 with a 72-month payoff is normally approved without financial statements.

Is there a cheaper way than this form?

The IRS Online Payment Agreement tool charges lower setup fees than a mailed 9465 and gives an instant answer for most balances.
