What is 990-EZ?
Form 990-EZ, Short Form Return of Organization Exempt From Income Tax, lets qualifying tax-exempt organizations, nonexempt charitable trusts, and section 527 political organizations satisfy their section 6033 reporting with a simpler return than the full Form 990. Eligibility depends on gross receipts and total assets staying under the current thresholds.
The form still covers the essentials: revenue, expenses, changes in net assets, a balance sheet, program service accomplishments, and a list of officers, directors, trustees, and key employees. Depending on the answers, schedules such as Schedule A, Schedule B, and Schedule O may need to be attached.

- Nonexempt charitable trusts and section 527 political organizations eligible for the short form
- Smaller charities that exceed the 990-N e-Postcard limits but not the full 990 thresholds
- Organizations that prefer the short form in a year they qualify for it

Frequently asked questions
Can my organization file Form 990-EZ instead of Form 990?
Only if its gross receipts and total assets are below the current thresholds set by the IRS. If the organization is above either threshold, it must file the full Form 990. Check the current instructions at irs.gov for the exact amounts.
Is Form 990-EZ also public?
Yes. Like the full Form 990, it is publicly disclosed, apart from certain contributor details on Schedule B, and organizations must provide copies on request.
What if we miss the filing deadline?
Late filing can bring penalties, and missing the required filing for three consecutive years results in automatic revocation of exempt status. Form 8868 can extend the due date if filed in time.
