Frequently asked questions

Who has to file Schedule 2?

Only taxpayers who owe one of the taxes it lists. Most people with just wage income and normal withholding never need it. Common triggers are self-employment tax, AMT, and repaying advance premium tax credit.

Does Schedule 2 calculate the taxes itself?

Mostly no. Taxes like AMT, self-employment tax, and the net investment income tax are figured on their own forms, such as Form 6251, Schedule SE, and Form 8960. Schedule 2 collects the results in one place.
