SF-701: Activity Security Checklist

SF-701 is the end-of-day checklist federal activities use to verify that classified materials are secured and the workspace is safe to leave: containers locked, desks cleared, equipment powered down.

What is SF-701?

SF-701, Activity Security Checklist, is a standard form used in offices and activities that process classified national security information. At the close of each working day, a designated employee walks the space and checks each item on the list, confirming that security containers are locked, classified documents are stored, burn bags and media are secured, and windows and doors are closed, then initials the column for that date.

The checklist provides a systematic way to meet the end-of-day security check requirements of the information security program (32 CFR Part 2001) and creates a record that the checks happened. It is typically posted near the exit of the area and used alongside SF-702, the Security Container Check Sheet, which tracks the locking and checking of individual containers. The current GSA revision is dated November 2010.

Who files SF-701?

  • Security managers who establish end-of-day check procedures for a classified workspace
  • Employees designated to perform and initial the daily security check
  • Facility security officers in cleared contractor facilities operating under the NISPOM
  • Supervisors of activities where classified information is produced, processed, or stored

How to fill out SF-701

  1. Enter the activity or office identification and the month at the top of the checklist.
  2. At the end of each working day, physically check each listed item: security containers, desks and wastebaskets, classified media, and windows and doors.
  3. Initial the block for each item and enter the time the check was completed for that date.
  4. Report any discrepancy, such as an unsecured container or unattended classified material, to your security office immediately rather than simply noting it.
  5. Keep the completed form posted in the activity and retain it according to your agency's records schedule; it is not mailed anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SF-701 and SF-702?

SF-701 covers the whole activity: one end-of-day sweep of the room or office. SF-702 is attached to an individual security container or vault door and records each time that container is opened, closed, and checked. Most classified workspaces use both.

Is SF-701 required every day?

The checks are required at the end of each working day in areas where classified information is used or stored. Agencies set the exact procedures, including how checks are handled during continuous operations, so follow your security office's instructions.

How long do we keep completed SF-701 forms?

Retention is set by your agency's records disposition schedule and security policy. Many activities keep the forms for a defined period after the month ends; confirm the current requirement with your security office rather than discarding them.
