What is 5695?
Form 5695 covers two separate credits. The residential clean energy credit applies to things like solar panels, solar water heaters, battery storage, and geothermal heat pumps installed on your home. The energy efficient home improvement credit applies to upgrades such as insulation, exterior doors and windows, heat pumps, and certain water heaters and furnaces that meet efficiency standards.
Each credit has its own part of the form with its own rules and limits, and the limits differ by type of improvement. The credit amounts flow from Form 5695 to Schedule 3 of your Form 1040. Check the current instructions at irs.gov for the percentage and dollar limits that apply to your tax year.

Frequently asked questions
Do both credits on Form 5695 apply to rentals?
Generally no. These credits are aimed at homes you use as a residence, and the energy efficient home improvement credit has additional rules tied to your main home. Property used solely for business does not qualify, and mixed-use property may be limited. Check the instructions for your situation.
Can the credits be carried forward?
The residential clean energy credit can carry forward if it exceeds your tax for the year. The energy efficient home improvement credit generally cannot. The form walks you through the limitation lines for each.
Do I need receipts to file Form 5695?
You do not attach receipts to the return, but you should keep purchase records and any manufacturer certification statements in case the IRS asks you to substantiate the credit.
