What is 6765?
The research credit rewards businesses that spend on qualified research: work aimed at developing or improving products, processes, software, or techniques through a process of experimentation grounded in hard sciences. Form 6765 offers two ways to compute it, the regular credit and the alternative simplified credit, and lets you elect the reduced credit under section 280C.
Qualified small businesses can also elect on this form to apply part of the credit against payroll taxes instead of income tax, which matters for startups without income tax liability. That election connects to Form 8974 and the employment tax return. The form also collects reporting detail about your qualified research expenses, so check the current instructions for what must be broken out.

Frequently asked questions
Regular credit or alternative simplified credit: which should I use?
The regular credit uses a base amount tied to historical data, which many businesses cannot reconstruct. The alternative simplified credit only needs the prior three years of qualified research expenses, so it is often the practical choice. You can compute both and pick the better result for the year, but the ASC election is made on the return.
Can a startup with no income tax use the credit?
A qualified small business can elect on Form 6765 to apply a portion of the research credit against its payroll taxes. The election has gross receipts limits and a cap, so check the current instructions at irs.gov for the amounts.
What counts as qualified research?
Broadly, work to develop or improve a product or process that is technological in nature, intended to eliminate uncertainty, and conducted through a process of experimentation. Routine data collection, market research, and research after commercial production generally do not qualify.
