What is 7004?

Form 7004 covers extensions for a long list of business returns, including Form 1120 for corporations, Form 1120-S for S corporations, Form 1065 for partnerships, and Form 1041 for estates and trusts. You identify the return by its form code, and the extension is automatic: the IRS does not send an approval, and will contact you only if the request is denied. Most returns get a six-month extension, though some entities have different periods described in the instructions.

The extension applies to filing, not paying. Tax owed is still due by the original deadline, and the form asks for your tentative tax and payments so you can pay the balance with the extension request. Filing on time with payment helps you avoid penalties and interest.

Who files 7004?

  • Corporations and S corporations that need more time to file Form 1120 or 1120-S
  • Partnerships and multi-member LLCs extending Form 1065
  • Estates and trusts extending Form 1041
  • Filers of other covered business, information, and excise-related returns listed in the form code table

Frequently asked questions

Does Form 7004 extend the time to pay?

No. It extends the filing deadline only. Interest, and often penalties, apply to tax not paid by the original due date, so estimate the liability and pay it with the extension request.

Will the IRS confirm my extension?

No confirmation is sent for the automatic extension. The IRS will notify you only if your request is not granted. Keep proof of timely filing, such as the e-file acknowledgment or mailing receipt.

When is Form 7004 due?

By the original due date of the return you are extending, which varies by entity type and tax year end. For calendar-year partnerships and S corporations that is generally mid-March, and for calendar-year C corporations generally mid-April. Check the current instructions for exact dates.
