Form 8809, Application for Extension of Time To File Information Returns
Form 8809 asks the IRS for extra time to file information returns such as Forms 1099, 1098, W-2, and 5498. Fill in the official PDF below and download it. Note that it extends the deadline for filing with the IRS, not for furnishing statements to recipients.

What is 8809?
Filers who cannot meet the deadline for submitting information returns to the IRS can request a 30-day extension on Form 8809. For most return types, the first extension is automatic: file the form by the original due date and the extension is granted without explanation. Certain forms are treated more strictly, including Form W-2 and Form 1099-NEC, where extensions are not automatic and are granted only for specific hardship reasons, with a signature required.
One Form 8809 can cover several types of information returns, and payers filing for multiple entities follow the batching rules in the instructions. The form can also be submitted electronically through the IRS FIRE system, which is the fastest route for automatic extensions. A second 30-day extension may be requested for some form types, but it is never automatic and must show why more time is needed.
Who files 8809?
- Businesses and payers that need more time to file Forms 1099, 1098, 3921, 3922, or W-2G with the IRS
- Employers requesting a non-automatic extension for filing Forms W-2 with the SSA
- Filers of Forms 5498, 1042-S, 8027, or 1094-C and 1095 series returns facing a deadline crunch
- Transmitters and service providers requesting extensions on behalf of multiple payers
How to fill out 8809
- Enter the filer’s name, taxpayer identification number, and address, and the transmitter control code if you file through FIRE.
- Check the box for each type of information return the extension should cover.
- If you are requesting an extension for Form W-2 or 1099-NEC, or a second extension for any form, check the applicable box, state the reason from the criteria in the instructions, and sign the form.
- Submit the request by the original due date of the returns: electronically through the FIRE system for automatic extensions, or download the PDF and mail or fax it as directed in the instructions.
- Keep a copy for your records and still furnish recipient copies on time, since Form 8809 does not extend that separate deadline.

Frequently asked questions
Does Form 8809 give me more time to send 1099s to recipients?
No. It only extends the deadline for filing with the IRS or SSA. The deadline for furnishing statements to recipients is separate, and a different procedure in the general instructions for information returns covers recipient-copy extensions.
Which extensions are automatic?
Most information return types get an automatic 30-day extension when Form 8809 is filed on time. Form W-2 and Form 1099-NEC are the main exceptions: those requests must meet specific hardship criteria, be signed, and are approved case by case.
Can I get a second extension?
For some form types, yes, an additional 30 days can be requested before the extended deadline expires. Second extensions are never automatic and require an explanation. They are not available for W-2 or 1099-NEC.
