Form 8822, Change of Address

The IRS does not learn your new address from the post office reliably. Form 8822 is the official notification for individuals, so refunds, notices, and letters follow you.

What is 8822?

Form 8822 updates the IRS’s records with your new home mailing address, for you, your spouse, and affected children when applicable. Filing it protects the things the IRS mails: refund checks, identity verification letters, and statutory notices that carry deadlines whether you saw them or not.

A notice mailed to your last known address counts legally as delivered, which is exactly why this form matters after a move. Businesses use the separate Form 8822-B.

Who files 8822?

  • Anyone who moved after filing their last return
  • Married couples updating one or both spouses’ addresses, including after separation
  • Parents updating addresses for children who file

How to fill out 8822

  1. Check the boxes for which tax matters the change affects.

Frequently asked questions

Is USPS mail forwarding enough?

No. Forwarding lapses and some IRS mail is not forwardable at all. The IRS considers your last known address authoritative until you tell it otherwise.

Can I just put the new address on my next return?

A newly filed return does update your address, but if months remain before you file, the 8822 closes that gap.
