What is DS700?

Carer's Allowance is claimed either online through gov.uk or on this paper form. DWP publishes DS700 for people who cannot or would rather not claim online: gov.uk tells you to print the form, fill it in with a pen and post it to the address shown on the form.

The form is long, around twenty four pages, because it collects details about you, about the person you care for, about the care you give, and about your earnings, education and other benefits. It also covers time spent abroad and any breaks in care, all of which affect entitlement.

How to fill out DS700

Read the Carer's Allowance guidance on gov.uk to check that you and the person you care for qualify.
Complete your own details, including your National Insurance number, and the details of the person you care for.
Answer the questions about the care you give, including hours and any breaks in caring.
Give your earnings, education and other benefit details, since these can reduce or stop entitlement.
Sign and date the declaration, then post the completed form to the Carer's Allowance Unit at the address printed on the form.

Worth knowing: Claiming Carer's Allowance online through gov.uk is usually quicker than posting DS700. Do not use this form if you get State Pension: use DS700(SP).

Frequently asked questions

Should I claim online instead?

Gov.uk offers an online Carer's Allowance claim and it is usually the faster route. The paper DS700 is there for people who cannot claim online.

I get State Pension. Do I use this form?

No. There is a separate version, DS700(SP), for people who already get State Pension. Use that one instead.

Does claiming Carer's Allowance affect the person I care for?

It can. A Carer's Allowance award may affect certain premiums or reductions the person you care for receives. Read the guidance on gov.uk, or speak to the Carer's Allowance Unit, before you claim.
