Can I work or travel while my I-485 is pending?

You can apply for an employment authorization document with Form I-765 and for advance parole travel permission with Form I-131. Do not travel abroad without advance parole; leaving can be treated as abandoning the application.

Do I need the medical exam at filing?

The exam is reported on Form I-693, completed by a USCIS-designated civil surgeon. Check the current I-485 instructions for whether you must include it at filing or may submit it later, since USCIS policy on this has changed over time.

What happens after I file Form I-485?

USCIS sends a receipt notice, schedules biometrics, may request more evidence, and often schedules an interview. If the application is approved you become a permanent resident and receive your green card by mail.
