What is I-765?

Form I-765 requests an EAD based on an eligibility category printed in the instructions: pending adjustment of status (c)(9), asylum applicants and asylees, students in specific programs, spouses of certain visa holders, TPS beneficiaries, and dozens more. The category code you enter drives everything: evidence, fee, and whether you qualify at all.

The card satisfies Form I-9 as a List A document and can come with an SSN if you request one on the form, which spares a separate trip to Social Security.
