What is I-601?

Form I-601, Application for Waiver of Grounds of Inadmissibility, is filed by people who have been found inadmissible to the United States and who are applying for an immigrant visa, adjustment of status, or certain other benefits. It asks USCIS to exercise discretion and waive the specific ground that blocks the case, such as unlawful presence, fraud or misrepresentation, certain criminal grounds, or certain health-related grounds.

Most waiver grounds require showing that a qualifying relative, typically a US citizen or lawful permanent resident spouse or parent, would suffer extreme hardship if the waiver were denied. Which relatives qualify and what must be shown depends on the specific ground, so read the instructions for your situation carefully. The waiver only covers the grounds you list; it does not cure other problems in the case.
