What is I-602?

Form I-602, Application by Refugee for Waiver of Inadmissibility Grounds, is used by refugees seeking admission to the United States and by refugees and asylees applying for adjustment of status who are inadmissible on certain grounds. The law allows most grounds to be waived for these applicants when a waiver serves humanitarian purposes, assures family unity, or is otherwise in the public interest.

The standard is more generous than the waivers available to other immigrants: no qualifying relative or showing of extreme hardship is required. Certain grounds still cannot be waived, including some drug trafficking and security-related grounds. The form is most often filed together with Form I-485 when a refugee or asylee applies for a green card, or it may be requested by USCIS during processing.
