Form I-929 lets a U-1 crime victim who is applying for a green card petition for certain family members who never held U nonimmigrant status themselves.

What is I-929?

When the principal U-1 nonimmigrant applies for adjustment of status, some family members were never granted U status, either because they were not included earlier or became qualifying relatives later. Form I-929 asks USCIS to recognize those family members so they can seek an immigrant visa or adjustment of status based on the principal’s case.

A separate Form I-929 is filed for each family member, and it can be filed together with the principal’s Form I-485 or afterward. The petitioner must show the qualifying relationship and that the family member would face extreme hardship if not allowed to remain in or come to the United States.

How to fill out I-929

Confirm the family member qualifies based on your age at filing and the relationship.
Complete the petition with your details as the U-1 principal and the family member’s biographic information.
Gather evidence of the relationship and of the hardship the family member would face without status.
File with or after your Form I-485; check the current fee, fee exemption rules, and mailing address in the I-929 instructions at uscis.gov.
After approval, the family member applies for an immigrant visa abroad or files their own I-485 if they are in the US.

Does an approved I-929 give my relative status?

No. Approval makes the family member eligible to apply; they still need to complete consular processing abroad or file Form I-485 in the United States.

Can I file the I-929 before my own green card is approved?

You can file it together with your Form I-485 or while it is pending, but USCIS cannot approve the I-929 unless your own adjustment is approved.
