What is N-426?

Naturalization through military service, under INA sections 328 and 329, waives or shortens several standard requirements, but USCIS needs official proof of honorable service. Form N-426 is that proof: it lists periods of service, the component, and character of service, and for current service members it must be certified by an authorized official of their military component before filing.

The form is filed together with Form N-400 as part of the military naturalization package. Applicants who have already separated can generally submit a photocopy of their DD Form 214, NGB Form 22, or equivalent discharge documents along with an uncertified N-426.

Who files N-426?

Current service members applying for naturalization based on qualifying military service
Recently separated veterans applying under section 328 or wartime service under section 329
Reserve and National Guard members with qualifying service
Certain spouses do not use this form; it certifies the service member’s own service only

How to fill out N-426

Complete your biographic information and list every period of military service with dates and component.
If you are currently serving, route the form through your chain of command or personnel office for certification by an authorized official.
If you have separated, attach copies of your DD-214, NGB-22, or equivalent instead of obtaining certification.
File the certified N-426 with your Form N-400 naturalization package; there is no fee for the N-426, and military applicants file the N-400 without a fee.
Keep a copy; USCIS may ask for updated certification if your service status changes before the oath.

Worth knowing: Current service members must route this form through military channels for certification before filing; an unsigned certification block will delay the N-400 package.
