What is SF 182?

SF 182, Authorization, Agreement and Certification of Training, is used across federal agencies to request, approve, and record training events, from a single conference session to a long-term academic program. It captures the trainee's information, the course or program details, the vendor, the direct and indirect costs, and the chain of approvals.

The form also serves as an agreement: for some training, employees agree to continue in service for a period afterward or repay the costs, and the SF 182 is where that obligation is documented. After the training, the form supports certification that the training was completed and recorded in the employee's training history.

How to fill out SF 182

Complete the trainee information section with your name, position, and contact details.
Fill in the training details: course title, vendor, location, dates, duty hours, and the purpose of the training.
Enter the cost information, separating tuition, materials, travel, and per diem as the form requires.
Sign the request and any continued service agreement that applies, then route the form to your supervisor and the approving officials your agency designates.
After approval, the form goes to your agency's training or HR office; many agencies now process SF 182 data through their learning management systems.

The name of the vendor's point-of-contact (POC).

The title of the course or the program that the applicant is scheduled to complete.

The number assigned to the course.

The start date of the authorized training. Enter date as yyyy-mm-dd.

The end date of the authorized training. Enter date as yyyy-mm-dd.

The number of the applicant’s duty hours required to successfully complete the training.

Number of employee’s non-duty hours required to successfully complete the training.

The number of academic credit hours or continued education units (1, 1.5, or .75) earned by the applicant for the completed training.

The date on which the Continued Service Agreement expires. Enter date as yyyy-mm-dd.

If applicable, enter applicant’s Student ID/Membership ID assigned by the Training Vendor.

Explain how the training event meets agency objective(s) and purpose type.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an SF 182 for free training?

Agency policy decides. Many agencies require the form for any external training so it appears in your official training record, even when there is no cost. Internal courses booked through the agency learning system often do not need a separate SF 182.

What is a continued service agreement?

For certain training, usually lengthy or expensive, you agree to remain in federal service for a set period after the training ends or repay some of the cost. The obligation is recorded as part of the SF 182 approval.
