What is T2220?
T2220 authorises a direct transfer of property between an RRSP, RRIF, PRPP or SPP of one spouse or common-law partner and a registered plan of the other, made under a decree, order or judgment of a court or under a written separation agreement following a breakdown of the relationship. Because the transfer is made directly between plans on this form, the amount is not treated as income and no tax is withheld at the time, keeping the retirement savings tax-deferred as they move between the two people.
T2220 is a dynamic PDF that the CRA publishes in Adobe XFA format. It does not fill in a web browser, so it will not display in the in-browser editor or quick-fill form here. Download it and open it in Adobe Acrobat Reader to complete the fields, then give it to the plan administrators.

Is the transfer taxable at the time it is made?
No. When funds move directly between the two registered plans on T2220 under a court order or separation agreement, the amount is not included in income and no tax is withheld, so the savings stay tax-deferred.
What authorises the transfer?
A decree, order or judgment of a court, or a written separation agreement relating to the division of property on the breakdown of the marriage or common-law partnership, must support the transfer.
