TD1 is the Canada Revenue Agency Personal Tax Credits Return. Employees and pensioners complete it so their employer or payer can calculate how much federal income tax to deduct from each payment.

What is TD1?
TD1, the 2026 Personal Tax Credits Return, is a Canada Revenue Agency form that your employer or payer uses to determine the amount of federal income tax to deduct from your pay or pension. You claim the federal personal amounts that apply to you, such as the basic personal amount and any additional credits for a spouse, dependants, age or disability. The total tells the payer how much tax to withhold at source.
TD1 is a dynamic PDF that the CRA publishes in Adobe XFA format. It does not fill in a web browser, so it will not display in the in-browser editor or quick-fill form here. Download it and open it in Adobe Acrobat Reader to complete the fields, then print and sign it for your employer.
Who files TD1?
- New employees starting a job with a Canadian employer
- Pensioners and other people receiving payments subject to tax withholding
- Anyone whose personal credits change, for example a new dependant or a disability claim
- Workers who want more tax deducted or who claim credits beyond the basic personal amount
How to fill out TD1
- Download the form and open it in Adobe Acrobat Reader, since it is a dynamic PDF that will not fill in a browser.

- Claim the federal personal amounts that apply to you and total them.

Do I send the TD1 to the CRA?
No. You give the completed TD1 to your employer or payer, who keeps it on file and uses it to calculate the tax deducted from your pay. Complete a new one when your situation changes.
Do I also need a provincial TD1?
Usually yes. Along with the federal TD1 you complete the TD1 for your province or territory of employment, such as TD1ON, TD1AB or TD1BC, so provincial tax is deducted correctly.
