VA Form 21-674 keeps a child on a veteran's or survivor's VA benefit after age 18 by certifying that the child is attending school. VA removes children from benefits automatically at 18 unless this request is approved.

What is VA Form 21-674?

VA Form 21-674, Request for Approval of School Attendance, asks VA to continue, or restore, dependency benefits for a child between 18 and 23 who attends an approved school. It identifies the student, the school, the course of study, the expected start and graduation dates, and the student's income, and it doubles as the report VA needs when attendance begins, changes, or ends.

The current edition is dated November 2024. The same information can be submitted online as part of VA's add-and-remove-dependents tool alongside VA Form 21-686c, which many filers find faster than mailing the paper form.

How to fill out VA Form 21-674

Fill in the veteran's and the student's identifying information, including Social Security numbers.
Enter the school's name and address, the course of study, and the dates attendance began or will begin and is expected to end.
Report the student's income and any government benefits the student receives, as the form requires.
Sign and date the certification.
Submit it online with the dependents tool on va.gov, upload it to your claim, or mail it to the VA Claims Intake Center address in the instructions.
