CRU1: Compensation Recovery Unit, register a claim for compensation

Form CRU1 is how a compensator, usually an insurer or the solicitor acting for one, registers a personal injury compensation claim with the DWP Compensation Recovery Unit (CRU).

This is the genuine DWP PDF, unmodified. Source: DWP official page.

What is CRU1?

The Compensation Recovery Unit administers the Compensation Recovery Scheme and the NHS Injury Cost Recovery Scheme. Where someone who was injured has received certain benefits, or received NHS treatment, the department can recover those amounts from the person or insurer paying the compensation. Registering the claim on form CRU1 is the first step that puts the case on CRU records.

The form asks for the injured person's details, the National Insurance number where it is known, the date and nature of the accident, injury or disease, details of the compensator and any representative, and the liability position. CRU uses that information to trace benefit payments and, in due course, to issue a certificate showing the amounts that may be recoverable.

Who files CRU1?

  • Insurers and other compensators handling a personal injury claim in Great Britain
  • Solicitors and claims handlers acting on behalf of a compensator
  • Self insured organisations and public bodies settling injury claims directly
  • Anyone who has been asked by CRU to register a case they are dealing with

How to fill out CRU1

  1. Enter the injured person's full name, address, date of birth and National Insurance number where you have it.
  2. Give the date of the accident, injury or disease and describe what happened.
  3. Complete the compensator details, including your reference and the representative acting on the case, if any.
  4. Answer the liability questions and the questions about the type of claim being made.
  5. Sign and date the form, then send it to the Compensation Recovery Unit using the address, fax number or email address printed on the form itself.
Worth knowing: CRU1 is for compensators and their representatives, not for injured people claiming compensation. Emails sent to CRU may not be secure.

Frequently asked questions

Who has to register a claim with CRU?

The compensator does. CRU forms are published for use by compensators such as insurers, and by their representatives such as solicitors. The injured person does not register their own claim on CRU1.

Is it safe to email a completed CRU1?

Gov.uk cautions that emails you send may not be secure and could be intercepted before reaching CRU. If the case involves sensitive details, use one of the other contact routes printed on the form.

Are there different versions of CRU1?

Yes. Alongside CRU1 there are Guernsey and Jersey versions, a CRU1 (Sol) for a solicitor taking over a registered case, and a CRU1 (Rep) for returning responsibility to the insurer. Check the gov.uk forms page for the right one.
