What is SF200?

The Funeral Expenses Payment is a Social Fund payment from the Department for Work and Pensions that helps with the cost of a funeral you are responsible for. It can cover burial or cremation fees, the doctor's certificate, travel to arrange or attend the funeral, moving the body more than 50 miles within the UK, and death certificates, plus a capped contribution towards other costs such as the funeral director's fees, the coffin or flowers. It will not usually cover the whole cost of the funeral.

Form SF200 Adult is the paper route into that claim. Over 28 pages it asks for your details and National Insurance number, which qualifying benefit you or your partner receive, details of the person who has died, the funeral and the funeral director, information about the estate and about any money already available to pay for the funeral, and your bank details. You must send the final funeral bill or the signed contract with the form; DWP cannot accept an estimate.

People arranging an adult funeral who get Universal Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Pension Credit, Housing Benefit or Support for Mortgage Interest
Partners of someone receiving one of those qualifying benefits
Claimants who are still waiting to hear about a decision on a qualifying benefit but must claim inside the time limit
Appointees, attorneys and helpers completing the claim on behalf of the person responsible for the funeral

How to fill out SF200

Read the SF200 notes that come with the form and work through the checklist before you start.
Fill in your own details, your National Insurance number and the qualifying benefit you or your partner get or are waiting to hear about.
Give the details of the person who has died, their estate, the funeral arrangements and the funeral director.
Tell DWP about any money already available or due towards the funeral, then complete the bank details and sign the declaration.
Send the signed form with the final bill or signed contract by post to Freepost DWP Funeral Payments, or take it to your local Jobcentre Plus.

Worth knowing: SF200 Adult is for people living in England or Wales. If you live in Scotland, look at Funeral Support Payment on mygov.scot instead. Claims must reach DWP within 6 months of the funeral.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I have to claim a Funeral Expenses Payment?

You must claim within 6 months of the date of the funeral. Gov.uk is clear that the time limit still applies if you are waiting for a decision on a qualifying benefit, so send the claim in rather than holding it back.

Can I claim before the funeral takes place?

Yes, if you already have an invoice or a signed contract from the funeral director. It cannot be an estimate. Without a final bill or signed contract DWP cannot decide the claim.

Is the paper form the only way to claim?

No. Gov.uk says the easiest way to claim is by phoning the Bereavement Service on 0800 151 2012, Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. The SF200 form is the postal alternative if you would rather claim in writing.
