GIRO Application Form for Stamp Duty

This one page IRAS form sets up a GIRO arrangement for stamp duty payment and refund matters, mainly for law firms, property agencies and corporate services firms that stamp documents regularly.

This is the genuine IRAS PDF, unmodified. Source: IRAS official page.

What is GIRO (Stamp Duty)?

Stamp duty is paid through the e-Stamping portal, and a GIRO arrangement lets IRAS debit the duty from a nominated account and credit any refund back to it. Because most heavy users of e-Stamping are professional firms, the form asks you to tick whether the applicant is a licensed real estate firm, an accounting or secretarial firm, a law firm or something else.

The form asks for the name of the taxpayer or company, the tax reference number, which can be a UEN, NRIC or FIN, the SD Account ID, a contact number and email address, and the bank account details including the account name exactly as the bank has it. Part 2 is completed by IRAS and Part 3 by the bank. IRAS states the form takes less than 5 minutes and that you will be notified when the bank has approved the GIRO application.

Who files GIRO (Stamp Duty)?

  • Law firms stamping conveyancing and share transfer documents through e-Stamping
  • Licensed real estate agencies handling stamp duty for clients
  • Accounting and corporate secretarial firms paying stamp duty on behalf of companies
  • Companies and individuals with an SD Account ID who stamp documents often enough to want GIRO

How to fill out GIRO (Stamp Duty)

  1. Enter the name of the taxpayer or company, the tax reference number and the SD Account ID.
  2. Add a contact number and email address, and tick whether you are a licensed real estate, accounting or secretarial, or law firm, or Others.
  3. Enter the account name as in the bank's records, the name of the bank and the account number.
  4. Sign, thumbprint or stamp in the signature box exactly as the bank holds it, and countersign any amendment instead of using correction fluid or tape.
  5. Mail the completed form to IRAS at 55 Newton Road, Revenue House, Singapore 307987; you will be notified once the bank has approved the GIRO application.
Worth knowing: IRAS says you will be notified once the bank has approved this GIRO application, rather than giving a set-up time, so do not count on GIRO being active for a stamping deadline that falls soon after you post the form.

Frequently asked questions

What is the SD Account ID?

It is the stamp duty account identifier IRAS uses for e-Stamping. The form treats it as a required field, so retrieve it from your e-Stamping account before you complete the form.

Does GIRO change when stamp duty is due?

No. The deadlines for stamping a document still apply, and GIRO only changes how the duty is collected. Check the current stamping deadlines on iras.gov.sg for your document type.

Can an individual apply, or is this only for firms?

Individuals can apply too. The applicant type box includes Others, and the tax reference number can be an NRIC or FIN rather than a UEN.
