What is 1005?

A bridging visa lets a person remain in Australia lawfully during a gap between visas, most often while a substantive visa application, a merits review or a court matter is being processed. Bridging visa A generally applies where you held a substantive visa and applied for another before it expired, Bridging visa B allows travel out of and back into Australia, and Bridging visa C applies where you were unlawful or applied without an existing substantive visa.

Form 1005 collects the applicant details, the substantive application or review the bridging visa relates to, and the reason a bridging visa is needed. A bridging visa does not replace a substantive visa; it only holds your lawful status and carries its own work and travel conditions, so the conditions attached matter as much as the grant itself.

Who files 1005?

  • People who have applied for a substantive visa and need lawful status while it is decided
  • Applicants seeking merits review or judicial review of a visa decision
  • People who need a Bridging visa B to leave and return to Australia during processing
  • People without a current substantive visa who need to regularise their status

How to fill out 1005

  1. Enter your personal details and current visa or immigration status exactly as recorded by Home Affairs.
  2. State which bridging visa you are applying for and the substantive application or review it relates to.
  3. Explain why the bridging visa is needed, including any travel plans if you require a Bridging visa B.
  4. Read the conditions that may attach to the visa, including any work restriction, and check the current fee at the agency site.
  5. Sign the declaration and lodge the completed form with the Department of Home Affairs.
Worth knowing: A bridging visa only maintains lawful status while a substantive matter is decided. Read the visa conditions on the grant notice, since work and travel rights are not guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions

Which bridging visa should I choose?

It depends on your situation. Bridging visa A suits people who applied for a new visa before an existing one expired, Bridging visa B adds travel rights, and Bridging visa C covers people who did not hold a substantive visa. Home Affairs decides eligibility for each.

Can I work on a bridging visa?

Work rights are not automatic. A bridging visa can be granted with or without work permission depending on your circumstances. Check the conditions on the grant notice before you start any work.
