What is I-360?
Form I-360, Petition for Amerasian, Widow(er), or Special Immigrant, covers a long list of classifications that do not fit the standard family or employment petitions. Common categories include widows and widowers of U.S. citizens, self-petitioners under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), special immigrant juveniles, religious workers, certain employees of international organizations, and certain Afghan or Iraqi nationals who worked for the U.S. government.
Requirements, evidence, and fees differ by category, and some categories, such as VAWA self-petitions and special immigrant juveniles, have no filing fee and extra confidentiality protections. An approved I-360 provides the immigrant classification; the beneficiary then pursues permanent residence through adjustment of status or consular processing.
Who files I-360?
- Widow(er)s of U.S. citizens, generally filing within two years of the citizen’s death
- Abused spouses, children, or parents self-petitioning under VAWA
- Special immigrant juveniles with a qualifying state court order
- Religious workers, and certain international organization or U.S. government employees abroad
How to fill out I-360
- Select your classification in Part 2; the category controls which parts of the form and which evidence apply to you.
- Complete the identity and address information for the petitioner and, where different, the beneficiary.
- Fill in the parts specific to your category, such as the widow(er), VAWA, or religious worker sections.
- Attach the category’s required evidence: a marriage and death certificate, abuse and relationship evidence, a juvenile court order, or the employer attestation for religious workers.
- Download the finished PDF and mail it to the USCIS address listed for your category in the form instructions, with the filing fee if your category requires one.

Are VAWA self-petitions kept confidential?
Yes. The law restricts USCIS from disclosing information about VAWA filings, and the abuser is not notified. File from a safe mailing address and consider listing a trusted representative.
Does an approved I-360 give permanent residence?
No. It grants the special immigrant classification. You still complete adjustment of status with Form I-485, or consular processing, when a visa number is available for your category.
