What is I-508?
Form I-508, Request for Waiver of Certain Rights, Privileges, Exemptions, and Immunities, implements section 247(b) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. A lawful permanent resident who takes an occupation that would entitle them to A, E, or G nonimmigrant status, such as working for a foreign government or an international organization, must waive the associated diplomatic privileges and immunities to remain a permanent resident.
Without the waiver, the law requires the person’s status to be adjusted to the nonimmigrant category matching the occupation, which means losing permanent residence. French nationals complete an additional supplement because of a treaty between the United States and France covering tax treatment.
