What is the difference between Form I-600 and Form I-600A?

Form I-600A asks USCIS to approve you as a suitable adoptive parent before a specific child is identified. Form I-600 is the petition for a specific child. Filing the I-600A first is common because it lets USCIS process your home study and background checks while you wait for a match.

Does Form I-600 apply to all intercountry adoptions?

No. It applies only to adoptions from countries that are not party to the Hague Adoption Convention. Adoptions from Hague countries use Forms I-800A and I-800 under a different process.

What happens after Form I-600 is approved?

The case moves to visa processing. The child is interviewed at a US embassy or consulate and, if everything is in order, receives an immigrant visa to enter the United States as your immediate relative.
