Do I file Form I-800 before or after adopting the child?

In most cases you must file before the adoption is finalized abroad. USCIS needs to provisionally approve the petition before the adoption or grant of custody is completed. Filing after finalization can cause serious problems, so follow the sequence in the instructions carefully.

What is the difference between Form I-800 and Form I-800A?

Form I-800A asks USCIS to find you suitable to adopt from a Convention country and is filed first, before a match. Form I-800 is filed later, for a specific child, and asks USCIS to classify that child as a Convention adoptee.

Is there a filing fee for Form I-800?
