What is I-824?

Form I-824 does not start a new immigration benefit. Instead, it requests follow-up action on a case USCIS already approved. Common uses include asking USCIS to notify a US embassy or consulate so a family member can pursue a visa abroad, and requesting a duplicate approval notice to replace one that was lost.

It is often filed by petitioners whose relatives adjusted status in the United States while derivative family members remained abroad and now need the approved case forwarded for consular processing (a process known as following to join).

Who files I-824?

Petitioners or applicants who need USCIS to send an approved petition to the National Visa Center or a consulate
People who lost their original approval notice and need a duplicate Form I-797
Adjusted permanent residents whose spouse or children abroad are following to join
Anyone whose approved case requires a follow-up action described in the form instructions

How to fill out I-824

Identify the approved application or petition, including its receipt number and approval date, from your Form I-797 notice.
Choose the specific action you are requesting in Part 2 of the form, such as consular notification or a duplicate approval notice.
Attach a copy of the original approval notice if you have it, plus any evidence the instructions require for your request type.
Sign the form and include the filing fee shown on uscis.gov.
Mail the application to the USCIS filing address listed in the current instructions for your request.
