What is LP1F?
A lasting power of attorney for financial decisions lets you, the donor, appoint attorneys to deal with your money and property. That can cover paying bills, running bank accounts, collecting a pension or benefits, and selling your home. You choose whether the attorneys act jointly, jointly and severally, or jointly for some decisions, and you can say whether they may act while you still have mental capacity or only once you do not.
GOV.UK notes that the same form is used both to make the LPA and to register it. It is signed in a set order by the donor, the certificate provider who confirms you understand what you are doing, and each attorney, and it only takes legal effect once the Office of the Public Guardian has registered it.

How to fill out LP1F
- Fill in the donor’s details and name your attorneys, plus any replacement attorneys.
- Choose how the attorneys must act together, and add any preferences or instructions you want them to follow.
- List the people to be told when the LPA is registered, then notify them on form LP3.
- Sign the form in the correct order: donor, certificate provider, then attorneys, each with a witness where the form requires it.
- Download and print the completed PDF, then send the signed original with the registration fee to the Office of the Public Guardian, PO Box 16185, Birmingham B2 2WH.

Frequently asked questions
Does the LPA work as soon as it is signed?
No. It must be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian before the attorneys can use it. GOV.UK says registration takes 8 to 10 weeks if there are no mistakes in the application.
How much does it cost to register?
A registration fee applies for each LPA. Check the current fee on GOV.UK, and if the donor is on a low income or certain benefits, apply for a reduction or exemption on form LPA120.
Can I make an LPA online instead?
Yes. GOV.UK offers a digital lasting power of attorney service as an alternative to the paper form. Some people still prefer paper, particularly where attorneys or the certificate provider need to sign in person.
