Form N-600, Application for Certificate of Citizenship

Form N-600 documents citizenship you already have: it asks USCIS to issue a Certificate of Citizenship to someone who acquired or derived US citizenship through a parent.

This is the genuine USCIS PDF, unmodified. Source: USCIS official page.

What is N-600?

Some people are US citizens by law without ever naturalizing: they acquired citizenship at birth abroad through a US citizen parent, or derived it automatically as children when a parent naturalized while they were under 18 and living in the US as permanent residents. Form N-600 does not grant citizenship; it asks USCIS to recognize it and issue the Certificate of Citizenship as permanent proof.

The evidence traces the claim through the parent: the parent’s citizenship, the parent-child relationship, and the physical presence or residence requirements of the law in effect at the relevant time. Rules changed over the decades, so the applicable statute depends on the applicant’s date of birth and family history.

Who files N-600?

  • People born abroad to a US citizen parent who acquired citizenship at birth
  • People who derived citizenship automatically when a parent naturalized before their 18th birthday
  • US citizen parents applying on behalf of minor children who acquired or derived citizenship
  • Adopted children of US citizens who meet the requirements of the Child Citizenship Act

How to fill out N-600

  1. Work out the basis of the claim: acquisition at birth abroad or derivation through a parent’s naturalization.
  2. Complete the biographic sections for yourself and the US citizen parent or parents.
  3. Gather the paper trail: birth certificates, the parent’s naturalization certificate or proof of citizenship, marriage records, and evidence of the required physical presence or residence.
  4. File online through a USCIS account or by mail with the current fee; check the fee and any military exceptions at uscis.gov.
  5. Attend an interview if USCIS schedules one; certificates are often issued at or after the appointment.

Frequently asked questions

I already have a US passport. Do I need an N-600?

Not legally; both are proof of citizenship. But a passport expires and the Certificate of Citizenship does not, and having the certificate makes future passport renewals and benefits claims simpler. Many people obtain both.

What is the difference between N-600 and N-600K?

N-600 is for people who are already citizens by acquisition or derivation, typically living in the US. N-600K is for children who live outside the US and do not automatically derive citizenship; it naturalizes them under INA 322 during a temporary lawful stay in the US.

Can the application be denied if I am really a citizen?

USCIS can deny for insufficient evidence even when the underlying claim is good. The remedy is usually more documentation, a motion or appeal, or in some cases applying for a passport, since the State Department adjudicates citizenship independently.
