V10: Application for vehicle tax
Form V10 is the paper application for vehicle tax, used at a Post Office branch that deals with vehicle tax when you cannot use the online service.
This is the genuine DVLA PDF, unmodified. Source: DVLA official page.
What is V10?
DVLA says you should only use V10 if you have not received a V11 reminder to get vehicle tax or make a Statutory Off Road Notification, if the vehicle details such as the tax class have changed, if there has been a break in taxing the vehicle, if you want to tax a vehicle during a SORN, or if you are applying by post for the 50 per cent reduction in vehicle tax on Personal Independence Payment or Adult Disability Payment entitlement.
The form has three short sections: your details, the vehicle details including the registration number, make, model and tax class, and the tax details covering whether you want 6 or 12 months and the month the tax should start. It cannot be backdated before the first day of the month in which you apply. Heavy goods vehicles use form V85 instead.
Who files V10?
- Drivers taxing a vehicle who have not had a V11 reminder from DVLA
- Keepers taxing a vehicle that is currently on a SORN, or after a break in tax
- Anyone whose tax class or vehicle details have changed since it was last taxed
- People applying by post for a 50 per cent reduction in vehicle tax
How to fill out V10
- Fill in section 1 with your title, name and current address in black ink and capital letters, or the business name where the keeper is an organisation.
- Complete section 2 with the registration number, make, model and the tax class you are applying for, plus the engine size in cc for a private or light goods vehicle.
- In section 3, tick 6 months or 12 months and give the month and year you want the tax to start. It cannot start before the first day of the month you apply in.
- Gather the documents DVLA asks for: the V5C registration certificate or the green new keeper slip, proof of a valid MOT or goods vehicle test certificate, and a V112 where the vehicle is exempt from MOT.
- Take the form and documents to a Post Office branch that deals with vehicle tax and pay there. Do not post the application to DVLA; the Post Office sends the information electronically and gives you a receipt to keep.

DVLA publishes V10 as a flat PDF with no built-in form fields, so there is no quick-fill form here. Open it in the editor to type directly onto the pages, tick boxes and sign, or download the official blank and complete it in your PDF reader or by hand.
Frequently asked questions
Can I post form V10 to DVLA?
No. DVLA states that you apply in person at a Post Office branch that deals with vehicle tax, and asks you not to send the application to them. The exception is an application for a 50 per cent reduction in vehicle tax, which goes to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BF.
What if I do not have the V5C or the new keeper slip?
You will need to fill in a V62 application for a vehicle registration certificate at the same time. If you are not the registered keeper you may not be able to tax the vehicle until the V5C is in your name.
Do I still need this form if the vehicle is MOT exempt?
Yes, but sign and attach a V112 declaration of exemption from MOT with it, or a V112G for exempt goods vehicles over 3,500kg.
