V890: Statutory off road notification (SORN)
Form V890 declares a vehicle off the road, a statutory off road notification, so that it does not have to be taxed or insured while it is not being used.

What is V890?
A SORN tells DVLA a vehicle is being kept off the public road, in a garage, on a drive or on private land. Once it is in place, vehicle tax and the continuous insurance requirement stop applying until the vehicle is taxed again. The vehicle must not be used or parked on a public road at all while the SORN stands.
Gov.uk pushes registered keepers towards the quicker routes: you can make a SORN online or by phoning 0300 123 4321 if you are recorded as the vehicle's keeper. The paper V890 is for the cases those routes do not cover, in particular where you are not yet registered as the keeper, in which case you send the relevant section of the V5C with the form.
Who files V890?
- Buyers who are not yet recorded as the keeper and cannot use the online service
- Keepers taking a vehicle off the road for restoration or long term storage
- People declaring a vehicle off the road immediately rather than from the start of next month
- Anyone without a V5C who is sending a V62 alongside the SORN
How to fill out V890
- Check first whether you can make the SORN online or by phone, which is faster if you are the registered keeper.
- Enter the registration number, make and VIN or chassis number of the vehicle.
- Complete your details and confirm the vehicle is being kept off the public road.
- Enclose the relevant section of the V5C if you are not yet the registered keeper, or a completed V62 if you have no V5C at all.
- Sign the declaration and post it to DVLA, Swansea, at the address printed on the form.

Should I use the form or go online?
If you are already the registered keeper, gov.uk says to make the SORN online or by phone on 0300 123 4321. The V890 is mainly for people who are not yet on the record as the keeper.
I have no V5C. What do I send?
Gov.uk says to complete a V62, which carries a fee, and send it with the V890. Check the current V62 fee on gov.uk.
Can I still drive the vehicle?
No. A vehicle with a SORN in place must be kept off public roads. The only common exception is driving to a pre booked MOT test appointment.
