Indiana Bill of Sale Requirements & Free Form

This page explains how private vehicle sales are documented in Indiana and how a general bill of sale fits into the title transfer handled by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

Indiana requirements

  • The certificate of title must be applied for within 45 days after the vehicle is purchased or otherwise acquired; the BMV charges an administrative penalty after that.
  • The assigned certificate of title is the primary ownership document; under BMV guidance a bill of sale transfers ownership only in limited cases, such as vehicle types not required to be titled.
  • Indiana publishes Bill of Sale State Form 44237; the BMV states a bill of sale is not required to be notarized. PDFRaw's general bill of sale is an alternative record for ordinary sales.
  • A valid bill of sale should include the purchaser's name, vehicle year, make, and model, the VIN, and the seller's signature and address.
  • Indiana publishes an Odometer Disclosure Statement, State Form 43230, for mileage disclosure when it is not completed on the title.
  • In a private sale the buyer pays sales tax at a BMV branch when applying for the Indiana certificate of title.

Frequently asked questions

Does an Indiana bill of sale need to be notarized?

No. The Indiana BMV states that a bill of sale is not required to be notarized or signed under penalties of perjury. It should still identify the buyer, the vehicle and VIN, and carry the seller's signature and address.

How long do I have to title a vehicle after buying it in Indiana?

Apply for the certificate of title within 45 days of the purchase. The BMV charges an administrative penalty when the application comes in after the 45 day window.
